My new office room.

In the new campus of AUST I’ve gotten my new office room. As a faculty member of Dept. of EEE it was assumed that unlike the previous campus, we’ll got our rooms. As due to lack of facilities, previous campus was unable to provide most of us a room (even a chair and table). We were glad that those terrible experiences are not returned in this new campus. Actually I didn’t get a whole room rather an one third of a room. I’ve to share my room with two other faculty members (Shariful Islam and Biplob Kumar Das), but whatever it is, I’ve gotten my own table and chair! 😛

I know it is childish, but can’t wait to share the fresh pics of my new office room with my readers. The room is literally neat and clean, as we have not decorated it yet! So here goes the couple of first day first show snapshots 😀

First Day First Show

Now, AUST has moved to its’ permanent new campus. Today was the opening of that campus. Students were all in a festive mode as they became a part of a history. It was just awesome! But there is some scarcity of facilities. In EEE department, faculty room has not been decorated at all! As I said earlier, laboratories are still incompleted. And we are lack of one lab, that is Simulation Lab. It surprised me when I found out that faculty spaces for all other departments has allready been decorated except EEE department. Ever since I joined in AUST, I found that EEE department is always been suppressed by the authority, though it is the largest department of the university with the large number of Faculties as well as students. But the authority does not take care of this department at all though a majority fund is come from EEE departemnt.

However, it is all our desire that this movement to a permanent campus will help AUST to increase its’ reputation in Bangladesh and aboard.

Following is a picture, where VC is giving speech today at 10:30 am as a part of the opening ceremony of the new campus. Sorry for the poor quality [as I took this one by my mobile phone].

AUST new campus

End of Fall Semester in AUST and others…

Tomorrow is the last day of FALL 2007 semester of AUST in its’ temporary campus. From the April 19, it will begin its’ journey in its permanent campus with starting of SPRING 2008 semester. The temporary campus is nothing in comparison with the highly enthusiastic permanent campus. The new one is lucrative as well as vast. But for the last one and half year all my memories were wrapped with the old one. Its’ very difficult to slash the relationship with oldie. May be after some span of time the oldie will be forgotten. But it surely needs time.

Now the obvious question is how much the new campus is ready for starting a new semester on the coming Saturday? Well to be frankly, it is not ready yet. All the laboratory has not been yet completed. The wiring system is a vital issue for all the Electrical related Labs. And our labs are lack of that. Also the class rooms are not well equipped. We’ve a simulation lab in papers not physically. How the students of simulation lab will pursue their lab experiments? To make it worse, all the cleaners are gone on strike! I don’t know how the authority thinks they can make it possible to start on April 19. Another problem that all the faculties, staffs and students will face is the transportation problem. Who have their own transport they can manage to attend the varsity but they are few in numbers. Majority of them who use the public transport system, will be in utmost trouble. Because there is still no public transportation route which will lead to the new campus safe and sound. More over as the campus is in some industrial area no taxi is available there. Authority must take these issue into their account and solve it immediately.

Class Routine

For the last two months I was working on the class routine for the upcoming semester. Alhamdulillah, I’ve finished it with help of Minhaz Bhaia and Kaiser. Making a routine for EEE department in AUST is always a cumbersome task. This time a massive amount of students, scarcity of class rooms, highest number of faculties and a totally new campus made the job more perplexed. But some how it has been done! Previously the routine was published in the notice board of the department. But this time due to a campus-shifting situation it has been decided to publish it in the new campus, but where in the new campus… that is undecided. This situation makes me to publish the class routine in my official site. Any one can download the routine from there. For AUST students who’ve collected it, please inform others to collect it.

Exam Anecdotes

The Fall 2007 semester of AUST came to an end with the last exam today. I am not a student anymore but still the end of the exam is a joy for me. No more early rising for the exam hall, no more invigilating, no more boring time spending. While I was a student, time passed away so quickly in the exam hall that we always wrestled with the limited time. But as an invigilator that limited time becomes endless until the final bell was rung. So for time passing I always try to observe each of the students very carefully. Some times this become fun as they do some peculiar tasks. This post is actually about those peculiar tasks of the students that I’ve observed during the whole Fall 2007 final exam.

Abstract art

I am not depicting any name, department or student identification number of the students, so that they can’t be recognized.

  • One student always used to bring 8 pencils, 5 pens, three erasers, two rulers (scale) and two calculators. He was very much cautious about the backup!
  • Another boy who has a pony-tailed hair, always wrapped his pony-tail with a rubber band when entered the hall and unwrapped it when his exam was over!
  • One boy had a smiling face who was always smiling during the exam, even when he was writing in the exam scripts.
  • A girl was there who did not write even the half of the whole answer scripts but stayed the hall until the last minute!
  • Another boy who always took on an average 10 pages in every exam! Some times it became difficult to staple his main script along with the extra pages.
  • All the students of one of the particular semester of a particular department was completely absent from the exam except for the very last day!
  • Another student was always singing in a whispering voice while writing in the script!

Busy Bee!

I am feeling like a busy bee. Life suddenly becomes busier now a days. It is the end of the Fall 2007 semester in AUST and the preparatory leave for the students to prepare themselves for the upcoming semester final has been started. all the teachers are doing actually nothing in this leave. But my fate is somewhat different! I got the job of planning the class schedule for the next semester (Spring 2008) for EEE department. Planning the class schedule of EEE department of AUST is considered the most cumbersome job. Because of the large body of both students and faculties. Moreover, next semester AUST is going to it’s permanent campus in Tejgaon. And in new building, EEE department is deprived of sufficient number of rooms. Yeah, I used the word DEPRIVE. Because ever since I joined in AUST, I saw that EEE department is not treated as it should be like other departments. New phenomena is Class room shortage in new building. AUST may provide only 8 (or less) rooms for the upcoming semester to EEE department to accommodate approximately 1200 students! I don’t know how I’ll finish the schedule. If the schedule is finished somehow students’ll not get rest between the classes or labs. It’s gonna be a tight schedule for the EEE department in the Spring 2008!

Routine

And offcourse thanks to Ahmed bhai who’ve helped me very much in setting question papers for the awaiting exam. Next semester some of our colleagues will leave AUST. Already Assistant professor Rafiul Hossain has left AUST for UIU. He is really one of the fewest people who are expert in VLSI. Two of our lecturers Ms. Sadia Moriam and Mr. Ziaur Rahman will leave AUST at the end of this February. Another lecturer Mrs. Nazia Farha will take leave for the next whole semester. I’ll really miss them.
